How to play Match Mania

Match Mania is a match-3 puzzle built around combo cascades. Swap two adjacent gems to align three or more of the same color in a row or column. Matched gems disappear, gems above fall to fill the gap, and any new alignments created by the fall trigger another match — a cascade. Long cascades are the entire point of the game; the satisfying part isn't the first match, it's the chain of unplanned matches that fires off after it.

Special pieces appear when you match four or five at once. A four-in-a-row creates a line clear, a five-in-a-row creates a color bomb, and an L or T shape creates a board-shaking explosion. Combining two specials produces ridiculous chain reactions. Levels have specific goals: clear a board, score X in N moves, drop a target item to the bottom, or survive a moving boundary.

Tips

Strategy guide: how scoring really works

Every cleared gem is worth 30 points times the cascade multiplier, and the multiplier climbs by one with each chain reaction. A plain three-match pays 90 points; the same three gems landing as the fourth link of a cascade pay 360.

Level 1 asks for 1,000 points in 25 moves. Each level adds 800 points to the goal and trims a move every other level, bottoming out at 15 moves around level 21. Stars are about economy: finish with 60% of your moves unspent for three stars, 30% for two. And if the board ever runs out of legal moves, it reshuffles itself for free.

A little real history

The swap-to-match formula has a precise birthday. Shariki, a 1994 Russian puzzle game, introduced swapping neighbors to line up three of a kind; Bejeweled carried the idea worldwide in 2001, and the cascade bonus became the genre's signature invention. Rewarding what happens after your move, not just the move itself, is what made match-3 one of the most played game genres on Earth.

Difficulty & play time
