How to play Word Wizard

Word Wizard is a 5-letter word puzzle in the Wordle tradition. You have six guesses to find the secret word. After each guess, each letter tile changes color: green if the letter is in the right position, yellow if the letter is in the word but in a different position, gray if the letter isn't in the word at all. Use the feedback to narrow down possibilities. Repeated letters work logically — two yellows means both copies exist somewhere; one yellow and one gray means only one copy exists.

Our dictionary is 14,800 words long and curated for school use — no profanity, no obscure jargon, no offensive content. The daily puzzle reshuffles at midnight UTC and is the same word for every player worldwide. Practice mode picks a random word from the dictionary, so you can play infinite rounds outside the daily.

Tips

Strategy: play the probabilities

Here is an edge most players miss: the guess dictionary is roughly ten times bigger than the answer pool, and answers are always common words. Torn between an obscure word and an everyday one? Pick the everyday one. Work the keyboard, too: a key locks green once its position is confirmed, and yellow keys only upgrade, never downgrade, so the keyboard is a running summary of everything you know. Solving in one guess earns "Genius!", two gets "Magnificent!", and squeaking by on the sixth gets a well-earned "Phew!"

From crosswords to Wordle

Five-letter guessing games have a long pedigree. Jotto, a pencil-and-paper game of deducing a secret five-letter word, was published in 1955. The TV show Lingo added colored-tile feedback in 1987, and in 2021 Josh Wardle's Wordle made the formula a global morning ritual. Word Wizard is our practice-friendly spin on that lineage.

Difficulty & play time

Difficulty: medium. Estimated time: 1–4 minutes per puzzle. Suggested age: 9+ (kids who can spell most 5-letter words). The educational value compounds — playing daily expands your active vocabulary measurably over weeks.

Frequently asked questions

Is the daily word the same for everyone?
Yes. Same word worldwide, same midnight UTC reset. Compare results with anyone who plays today.
Can I share my result?
Yes — there's a share button after you finish that copies an emoji-grid version of your result without spoiling the answer.
What if my word isn't in your dictionary?
The game rejects words not in the 14,800-word list. That keeps results consistent across players. If you think we're missing a valid word, email contact@coolhistorygames.com and we'll add it.
Do my stats save?
Yes. Wins, games played, and your streak persist in your browser's local storage between visits.
